At the Heart of the Vale - Our Plan for 2024-28

Closes 14 May 2024

Opened 16 Apr 2024

Overview

At the heart of the Vale of White Horse, the Council is making a place that our residents feel proud to call home. It’s not just our mission for today. We want to secure a vibrant, inclusive and happy place for this generation and generations to come. This clear purpose guides how we serve our residents and the Vale today to ensure a bright future.

The Vale is a great place to live, work and thrive. But like you, everyone at the council wants our district to become even better. Right now, we are going through a process of working out what ‘better’ looks likes, and identifying how we can help achieve this.

We are developing a new plan and want you to help us. It will drive everything we do over the next four years.

What is the Vale's Plan?

It sets out a strategic vision along with our ambitions and priorities for Vale of White Horse District Council. The idea is for us to have a number of common themes that run throughout everything we do - we call that our 'golden thread'.

Background

Our current four-year plan began in 2020 and runs until October this year so we're now setting our priorities for the next four years.

Four years ago, we asked you to let us know what you thought about our ideas for what became our current Corporate Plan. Thanks to your feedback, we've prioritised tackling the climate and ecological emergencies with ambitious carbon reduction targets, extensive decarbonisation work at our leisure centres and biodiversity projects around the district. We're also shortly about to announce some exciting new projects to tackle affordable housing, another topic you told us you were keen on. You can read more in our performance reports.

Draft themes for our new plan

We’re proposing the following themes to guide our aspirational plans for the Vale:

Theme 1: Providing the homes people need.

Theme 2: Supporting climate and nature recovery.

Theme 3: Creating healthy, sustainable & inclusive communities.

There is a bit more detail later in the survey about how we might achieve our objectives under these themes. There are also three questions based on ways we want to work, including showing openness and accountability, providing stable finances and supporting local businesses.

The plan for the next four years will be rooted in hearing what a better Vale means for you. We are not presenting you with a polished plan to rubber stamp or reject, rather we are starting to develop it. We want to work out the details with you.

What happens next?

We will use the feedback received to work up a draft ‘At the Heart of the Vale’ 2024-2028 plan, which we will share in the autumn. The draft corporate plan will be subject to usual democratic and scrutiny process before adoption of the final plan by Full Council in October 2024. We will publish the final plan, alongside a consultation summary report on our website.
